Learn why SEO success isn't promised and why SEO results aren't guaranteed. Understand how to find ethical SEO success.
One of the questions I’ve been asked a fair bit is how I stay on top of SEO. It’s a great question because the world of search changes frequently. People want to know how to keep up.
It’s easy to get lost in the sea of online resources. With easy access to online information and tools, but only so much time available to us each day, the challenge is finding content that’s worth our time – content that’s helpful, practical, and fresh. Because there are plenty of ways to stay up to date with SEO, and because it’s a challenge to disseminate what you need from what’s available, I’ve decided to share some of my go-to resources.
Subscribe to trusted SEO blogs
I’ve often found an abundance of quality advice through informational and instructive blogs. There’s a how-to piece of content for many questions and scenarios. You can also find editorial pieces for most new SEO trends and news if you’re looking in the right places.
Google’s Webmaster Central Blog is a great place to find information about Google Search, straight from the source. Subscribing to this blog gives you access to updates and news as they happen.
I’m a WordPress enthusiast and a Yoast user, so it might not come as a surprise to recommend Yoast’s SEO blog. They cover everything from what’s going on in the world of SEO, to updates with the plugin itself. You won’t find anything overly-in-depth (my opinion), but subscribing with email will drop Yoast’s tips and anything new to the plugin in your inbox, on a weekly basis.
Lastly, I’d be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to shamelessly recommend the Expander Digital blog. You can find a little bit of everything here! I’ve covered a wide range of topics for people all over the SEO spectrum. You can find complex topics, tutorials, news, and trends to keep anyone with a vested interest in SEO informed. You can also easily follow what we’re working on monthly by email-subscribing to our newsletter. The signup form is right on the blog.
Add helpful SEO personas to your Twitter feed
Twitter is a low-maintenance way to incorporate SEO news into something that is already part of your routine. You can follow lists that are SEO-related and are often curated by experts. It’s highly likely that your go-to outlets have a Twitter account, too.
Barry Schwartz runs Search Engine Roundtable, a website that is an SEO staple for me. His no-nonsense approach to delivering news is awesome (my opinion). While his video recaps are baked into my Friday mornings, not everyone has the time to watch those videos. The next best thing is to find and follow Search Engine Roundtable on Twitter. Barry is very active on the platform and publishes new and updated stories frequently.
You might want to also find and follow other prominent people in the SEO community, like Google’s John Mueller (@JohnMu on Twitter), for search-engine-specific trends and news right in your feed. Sometimes you can even get answers to questions if you tweet him.
If you follow no one else on Twitter, the two individuals I’ve mentioned here provide extremely helpful information that will help you stay on top of your SEO game.
Attend SEO conferences and (often free!) meetups
SEO conferences like MozCon and SearchLove aggregate industry veterans from around the world for presentations and open discussions on trending topics. These panels, presentations, and networking opportunities are yours with a ticket. Keep in mind, most SEO conferences in 2020 have gone virtual, in light of the pandemic. When they return to live events is still to be determined for many SEO-related events.
Another option for you is a local meetup focused on SEO. These events effectively plug you into nearby experts who can from time to time, will share updates at SEO-focused meetup events. Meetups are often more accessible than conferences, accompanied by affordable, and often free price points. Depending on your location, and if you’re lucky, you can find entire Meetup groups focused on SEO alone.
